Looking Within
“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” - Carl Jung
This is one of many quotes that deeply resonates with me. It can be all too easy in our fast-paced, externally focused world, to get caught up in the whirlwind of distractions. We’re constantly bombarded with information, notifications that demand our attention. As a result, we often neglect the most important resource we have: ourselves. Carl Jung, the renowned psychologist, understood the profound importance of looking within (introspection). His quote, "Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes," encapsulates the idea that true understanding and growth come from within.
Our Dream State of External Focus - When we focus solely on external stimuli, we're essentially living in a dreamlike state. We're reacting to the world around us, rather than actively shaping our experiences. We become passive observers, allowing external forces to dictate our emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. This constant external focus can lead to a variety of issues including; anxiety and stress: Constant exposure to external stressors can overwhelm our minds and bodies. A lack of fulfillment: with us chasing external validation and success that can leave us feeling empty and dissatisfied. Our decision making can become impaired: when we're not grounded in our own values and beliefs, it's difficult to make sound choices. External distractions can hinder our ability to connect with others on a deeper level.
Our Awakened State of Internal Focus - In contrast, when we turn our attention inward, we begin to awaken to our true potential. Introspection allows us to focus our attention to our inner world, we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and our motivations as to who we are. We can improve our relationships, reduce stress, and make better choices. By practicing introspection and mindfulness, we can unlock our full potential. We can develop resilience and cope with life's challenges more effectively.
There are a few suggestions on how we can deepen the connections to ourselves. Taking time out daily to notice what is happening in your inner world either first thing in the morning or evening. Pausing at the end of each task in your day whether this is on the school run, at the ending of a meeting or finishing some aspect of your day job. Becoming aware of any thoughts or feelings you are experiencing in the present moment. Spending time outdoors, immersing yourself in nature can help you feel more connected to yourself and the world around you. Maybe having a solo retreat, where you can be alone and allow yourself to reflect on your life and goals. Even seeing a therapist can provide guidance and support as you explore your inner world.
By making a conscious effort to look within we can cultivate a deeper connection with our inner selves.
